Ramen…RIP silk shirt

First thought, how in the world do you eat ramen gracefully?  I’ve used chopsticks a few times now but I’m certainly not used to them yet.  I’m just happy when I can manage my fork and knife pretty well no less chopsticks.  So I’ve got the chopsticks to try and manage and neverending noodles and I can’t get them down into a small spoonful or bite?  I thought it would be similar to pasta but with the pasta you can still cut the noodles, how do you create manageable bites with chopsticks though?

Thankfully after watching me struggle for a while one of my friends went ahead and asked the server for some silverware and I was finally able to eat some of it.  I would like to think for the most part I’m pretty put together at the dining table but my poor silk shirt suffered from this one with little splatters of the broth from my attempts : (

Once I was able to finally eat some of it though I could pay attention to the flavors which were really good.  I got the Tennessee Tonkotsu at Otaku Ramen which had a pork bone broth, pork confit, mayu, woodear, scallion and egg.  The broth was really flavorful and it is interesting how it all comes together when mixed up.  The broth is what stood out the most to me because it was more flavorful than I expected.  The noodles were cooked well and were really long and wrapped together.  The pork confit mixed in and combined really well with everything and the mushrooms added some additional texture and seemed to take on the flavors of the broth.

Throughout the meal I was trying to figure out what the best balance is supposed to be between having some of the noodles while also getting some of the broth at the same time.  It is tricky to set it up where you have everything together for one bite.  It is similar to a soup where there is a lot going on with different textures because you have both solid foods and liquids happening at the same time.  It is very interesting trying to find the balance between the two and I think it will take a few more attempts before I’ve mastered it.

Overall, it was a great introduction to ramen noodles, I just need some practice eating it!

  1. Your article was well written: it was an interesting account on how to eat one of the more difficult foods, like Ramen noodles, gracefully! I have the same problem when I eat them and many splattered blouses to prove it! It sounds like you had a great sampling of it though: especially with the rich bone broth.
    Nice job!
