The Lovely Lemon

My Thoughts on Lemons

Although I am not really eating a lemon per se for the first time I have tried to start including lemon juice in my diet.   In the past I would not even consider adding the slice of lemon into my water at dinners and would immediately take the lemon slice off my cup of water.  I’m sure this comes as no surprise but lemons are very sour or tart and citrusy.  This is not a taste I encounter very often as I tend to steer towards plain, sweet or salty foods.  So far I have tried fresh lemon juice in either cold or warm water.  You could always add a bit of sugar as well for some lemonade!

Health Benefits of Lemons

The good news is there are a whole bunch of health benefits from lemons that are pretty easy to take advantage of just by adding a bit of lemon juice into your water every now and then.  Even better you can take advantage of these benefits for less than 20 calories.  Here are some of the benefits I discovered.

  • Lemons are rich in Vitamin C which helps support your immune system.
  • Lemons contain pectin fiber with is a beneficial antibacterial and assists in fighting hunger cravings.
  • Lemons help flush toxins out of your system by enhancing enzyme function which aids digestion and can relieve symptoms of indigestion.
  • Lemons are a great source of citric acid, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium.
  • Lemons help reduce pain and inflammation in joints.
  • Lemons contain potassium which is good for heart health and helps to nourish brain and nerve cells.
  • Lemons are beneficial to the skin and prevents the formation of wrinkles and acne.
  • Lemons maintain the health of eyes.
  • Just be careful with lemons on your teeth or directly on your skin as they are very acidic.

Tips on Lemons & Fun Ideas

  • Look for lemons that are firm and feel heavy for their size with a bright yellow color.
  • To keep lemons longer, place in your refrigerator in a zip lock bag.
  • If you only need a little juice, insert tines of a fork through the skin and squeeze out the amount you need.  Then wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until you need it again.
  • For even longer storage, place whole lemons or lemon juice in freezer until ready for use.
  • If you have ice cube trays, add a few drops of lemon juice to each cube to add a bit of flavor to your next glass of water.
